Joshua Tree National Park

Viewed from the road, this desert park only hints at its vitality. Closer examination reveals a fascinating variety of plants and animals that make their home in this land shaped by strong winds, unpredictable torrents of rain, and climatic extremes. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the attraction of this place.

Joshua Tree National Park Map

Geography
Joshua Tree is a transition zone. Deserts don’t have firm boundaries and, much of the park lies in the overlap between the Colorado and Mojave deserts. This transition has a wealth of biological diversity and is home to species characteristic of each desert ecosystem.

Colorado Desert
The eastern half of the park, below 3,000 feet above sea level, lies within the Colorado Desert. It features the habitats of Creosote bush scrub; Ocotillo, desert Saltbush and mixed scrub including Yucca and Cholla cactus. There are areas of such cactus density they appear as natural gardens. The lower Coachella Valley is on the southeastern side of the Park with sandy soil grasslands and desert dunes. Many small mammals, birds and reptiles live here and are well adapted to the harsh environment.

Mojave Desert
The western half of the park, at elevations above 3,000 feet, is Mojave Desert habitat. It is considered higher, drier, and slightly cooler compared to the western half of the park and is known for the Joshua tree for which the park is named. The dominant geologic features of this landscape are hills of bare rock, usually broken up into loose boulders.

Mojave Desert part of the park

Safety
It is easy to become dehydrated in arid desert environments. Even if you only plan to drive through the park, you should have some water with you. If you are going to camp, we recommend one gallon of water per person per day. If you are going to be hiking or biking, you will want to take along two gallons per person. Drink the water and do not economize. When the water is half gone, it is time to turn back. Joshua Tree is of course a desert and the hot temperatures during the day can drop dangerously low during the night. Wear the right clothing for the time of day you plan to visit the park and bring layers is always recommended.

What to Do

Camping
Nine established campgrounds exist in the park, only two of which (Black Rock Canyon and Cottonwood) provide water and flush toilets. A fee is charged per night for each camping spot. Backcountry camping, for those who wish to backpack, is permitted with a few regulations.

Hiking
There are several hiking trails within the park, many of which can be accessed from a campground. Shorter trails, such as the one mile hike through Hidden Valley, offer a chance to view the beauty of the park without straying too far into the desert. A section of the California Riding and Hiking Trail meanders for 35 miles through the western side of the park. The lookout point at Keys View, towards the south of the park, offers views of the Coachella Valley and Salton Sea.
Nature walks inside the park include: Hidden Valley, Indian Cove, and Cholla Cactus Garden.
Longer trails include: Lost Horse Mine, Lost Palms Oasis, and Fortynine Palms Oasis.

Rock Climbing
The park is popular with rock climbers and was originally a winter practice area while Yosemite Valley and other parts of the Sierra Nevada were snowbound, but later became an area of interest in its own right. There are thousands of named climbing routes, at all levels of difficulty. The routes are typically short, the rocks being rarely more than 230 ft (70 m) in height, but access is usually a short, easy walk through the desert, and it is possible to do a number of interesting climbs in a single day.

Star Gazing
It is estimated that only around 10 percent of the population of the United States is able to see the night sky in its natural, unpolluted state. No wonder visitors to Joshua Tree National Park are awed and astounded when they get their first glimpse of the night sky. It’s the perfect place to get a nice, clear view of the Milky Way. Joshua Tree is especially popular on nights when meteor showers are visible to the naked eye.

Yosemite National Park

"It was like lying in a great solemn cathedral, far vaster and more beautiful than any built by the hand of man." –Theodore Roosevelt after camping in Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite National Park, one of the first wilderness parks in the United States, is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more.

Where to stay?

Lodging options in Yosemite National Park range from simple tent cabins to deluxe rooms at The Ahwahnee, a four star hotel located in Yosemite Valley.

 The Ahwahnee Hotel

The majority of visitors decide to stay in the available lodging in Yosemite Valley which includes The Ahwahnee, Yosemite Lodge at the Falls, Wawona Hotel, Curry Village, and other hotel locations while others decide to make reservations at campgrounds in the surrounding wilderness.

You can plan your visit and make lodging reservations here:

When to visit?

If you're planning a trip to Yosemite, first decide during which season you plan to visit, then decide where you'll spend the night (if you spend the night) so you can make lodging or camping reservations. Then, you can find the answer to the age-old question about what there is to do in Yosemite.

Summer
June – September

All areas of the park are usually accessible by car by late May or early June. The climate will be warm to hot, with occasional rain (usually as afternoon thundershowers, especially at the higher elevations). Most of the water flowing in Yosemite comes from snowmelt in the high country, so runoff decreases during the dry summer. Peak runoff typically occurs in May or June, with some waterfalls (including Yosemite Falls) often only a trickle or completely dry by August. Other waterfalls, including Vernal, Nevada, and Bridalveil, run all year, however their flow can be very low by late summer.

Fall
October and November

All areas of the park usually remain open through October, and sometimes into November. However short-term closures may occur due to snow. The climate in Yosemite is quite variable, with weather ranging from hot to cold, dry to rainy or snowy. Water levels tend to be very low, with waterfalls (including Yosemite Falls) containing little or no water. Some waterfalls, including Vernal, Nevada, and Bridalveil, run all year, however their flow slows to a trickle by fall. Yosemite is not known for having spectacular fall colors because most of the trees are evergreen. Still, big-leaf maples, black oaks, Pacific dogwoods, and other deciduous trees tend to be showy around mid-October.

Winter
December – March

Winter in Yosemite is snowy and cold, though sunny and chilly days are not uncommon. Most of the roads that lead to higher elevation are closed during winter making access to those areas of the park limited. Water levels tend to be low, but once some snow and rain have fallen, Yosemite Falls begins flowing again (though not at springtime levels). Most of the park is covered in snow during winter, but some trails in Yosemite Valley are often accessible.

Spring
Aril and May

In spring the climate is highly variable, with sunny and relatively warm days, but still an occasional winter storm. As warmer weather begins to melt the snow, even the smallest creeks are rushing with water. You may see many small, unnamed waterfalls and cascades all along the Valley rim. Larger creeks and rivers, along with the better known waterfalls, tend to reach peak runoff in May or June.

What to do?

Visit Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias

The Mariposa Grove is located 36 miles (one hour) south of Yosemite Valley, near the park's South Entrance. The Mariposa Grove is the largest stand of giant sequoias (also known as Sierra redwoods or big trees) in Yosemite.

 Giant Sequoia

Visit Glacier Point

Glacier Point, an overlook with a commanding view of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and the High Sierra is located 30 miles (one hour) from Yosemite Valley. The road ends at Glacier Point and it is a short walk to the viewpoint.

 View from Glacier Point

Hike

There are many hikes in Yosemite. Some of the less strenuous but very beautiful ones can be found in Yosemite Valley. Some popular day hikes accessible from Yosemite Valley are the hikes to Lower Yosemite Fall, Mirror Lake/Meadow, Valley Floor Loop, Four Mile Trail, Half Dome and many others.

 The Cables up Half Dome

Biking

Over 12 miles of paved bike paths are available in Yosemite Valley. In addition, bicyclists can ride on regular roads (if they obey traffic laws). This is a great way to view the valley floor. Bicycles are available for rent in Yosemite Valley.

Rock Climbing

Modern rock climbing as we know it today was born here in Yosemite Valley.  It is one of the world's greatest climbing areas. Climbers here can enjoy an endless variety of challenges--from the sustained crack climbs of the Merced River Canyon to pinching crystals on sun-drenched Tuolumne Meadows domes to multi-day aid climbs on the big walls of the Valley.

Climbing El Capitan

Stargazing

Yosemite National Park, miles from the nearest city lights, has a very dark night sky that makes it a great place to look at the stars. Bring along a star chart and look for constellations, or look through binoculars at some of our planetary neighbors. In June, July, and August, amateur astronomers often set up telescopes at Glacier Point on Saturdays, and astronomy walks or talks are also be offered in Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, and Wawona.

Are you READY?

Little Tips Before you Takeoff

  • Make sure that all your documents are properly acquired and completed, such as paperwork and visa for passport (sometimes it can take up to six weeks to obtain the visa).
  • Recheck whether your credit and insurance cards are in your wallet/purse and did not end up on the dining table while you are in the plane.
  • For those who are not millionaires, prepare how much money you want to spend on your trip (transportation, restaurants, hotels, souvenirs, etc).

What? Domestic and International Travel?
  • Domestic travel, in this case, is in the U.S. and it also includes Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • International travel is other places in the world and requires more procedures:
    • You will need a passport when you return from other countries to the U.S.
    • Each country have different considerations, so it is best to find out more information at the country's embassy (if you are in other country other than USA, you can search online for the country's embassy in your country).
Walk, Sit, Stand, Drive?
Each country has their own ways of transportation:
  • Backpacking - Some countries you can tour by just bare feet and many people love to travel with just one bag and their shoes!
  • Trains - There many types of train transportation such as sky-train, railroad, underground, and high-speed rail. Some countries like Europe is best to travel by trains.
  • Cars - It is fun to drive-tour in another country, but you want to make sure that you know the rules of the road before you start your engine.
Where to sleep?
You don't want to end up having no place to spend a night, right? Then where should you search for a place to stay? Booking your accommodation should be done before your trip starts.
